Earthquake shakes Cyprus – no major damage reported

Cyprus, 12 November 2025 – On Wednesday morning, an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 shook the island of Cyprus. According to Reuters, the epicenter was about 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Paphos at a depth of about 15 kilometers. The quake was clearly felt at around 11:32 a.m. local time.

Residents reported vibrating windows and swaying furniture, and some public buildings in Paphos were evacuated as a precaution. According to the authorities, there were no injuries or major property damage. Air traffic and energy supply also remained unaffected.

The earthquake was also slightly felt in parts of Lebanon and Israel. Experts explain that Cyprus is located on an active tectonic fracture zone between the African and Eurasian plates. Light to medium earthquakes like this one are therefore not uncommon.

The government called on the population to observe the security measures in force. Experts emphasized that modern buildings in Cyprus are much better protected against earthquakes today than they used to be.
