Heavy rainfall floods roads in Larnaca and Famagusta - locally partly strong weather phenomena expected
On Christmas morning 2025, the east of Cyprus in particular was hit by intense rainfall. Heavy rain led to flash floods there, which turned numerous roads in the Larnaca district and in the area of free Famagusta into veritable watercourses. Numerous videos have spread on social networks that impressively document the extent of the floods.
While the eastern regions are struggling with the consequences of the heavy rain, the weather in other parts of the island is much friendlier. There is sunny weather with pleasant temperatures of up to 19 °C.
Weather development in the coming days
The Cypriot weather service points out that the brief calming of the weather on Christmas morning will not last. A currently still weak high-pressure area will lose influence in the course of the afternoon and make way for more changeable, locally sometimes strong weather phenomena.
Weather conditions in the afternoon and evening of Christmas Day
In the further course of the day, variable clouds and isolated rain showers are to be expected throughout the island.
Wind: Light to moderate wind from northeast to southeasterly directions, force 3 to 4 Beaufort.
At night: Temperatures drop to around 10 °C in the interior and around 12 °C on the coasts. In the highest altitudes of the Troodos Mountains, values of around 4 °C are expected.
Note: There may be frost locally in the Troodos Mountains.
Outlook for Boxing Day (Friday)
For Friday, a much more unstable weather situation is announced, especially after noon.
Weather: Locally rainfall and isolated thunderstorms are possible.
Troodos Mountains: In the highest regions, meteorologists do not rule out sleet or even snowfall.
Risk of thunderstorms: There is a possibility of hail during thunderstorms.
Temperatures: The daily highs will be around 19 °C inland and around 20 °C along the coast.
