Storm damage off Liopetri: Millions of farmed fish escaped into the open sea to freedom
Severe storms caused considerable damage to aquaculture facilities off the coast of Liopetri on Wednesday. As a result of the strong storms, large quantities of farmed sea bass and sea bream were washed out of the damaged facilities into the open sea.
The responsible Ministry of Fisheries confirmed that several offshore farms were affected by the extreme weather conditions. As a result, countless fish were able to escape, the exact number of which cannot yet be quantified.
According to representatives of the authorities, the damage analysis is complex. "Each individual plant contains millions of fish, which is why a precise determination of losses is hardly possible at the moment," explained a responsible official. The operators are still busy recording the extent of the damage.
The incident is part of a series of similar events. In recent years, strong storms have repeatedly damaged offshore farms and released large fish stocks.
Experience has shown that such an incident leads to increased activity among recreational fishermen, especially along the coastal sections near Liopetri and around Vasiliko, where important aquaculture sites are located.
However, the authorities urge compliance with existing fisheries regulations. The sudden influx of farmed fish could further increase the pressure on stocks. Accordingly, the public is called upon to act responsibly and to strictly observe the minimum legal standards.
Currently, sea bass must reach a minimum size of 25 centimeters, while a minimum length of 20 centimeters is prescribed for sea bream. Both fish species are particularly sought after by local anglers.
Detailed reports from the affected operators are expected in the coming days. In parallel, the competent authorities continue to monitor developments at sea and assess the possible long-term impact on fish stocks.
