"Unbreakable Alliance": Greece and Cyprus reaffirm their ties
At the 11th Panhellenic Congress of Reserve Officers in Athens, Parliament Speaker Annita Demetriou declared that Greece and Cyprus form an unbreakable entity and that their relationship must not be shaken by any circumstances.
She praised the reserve officers as the backbone of the armed forces and as a link between active soldiers and the reserve community. In the face of rising tensions, Demetriou pointed to Turkey's ongoing violations of international law (e.g. in Cyprus' economic zone and in the Aegean Sea).
Demetriou said the two states would jointly stand up for legality, democracy and equal treatment – and warned against double standards in Europe. She described Greece as Cyprus' strongest diplomatic partner.
MFRadio conclusion: Solidity in uncertain times. Athens and Nicosia are clearly committed to the common line – strong domestically, united in foreign policy.
